King Kamehameha I founded the Kingdom of Hawaii in 1795 when he had conquered most of the Hawaiian archipelago. After years of battle, he united the Hawaiian Islands into one royal kingdom in 1810. He ruled as the sole sovereign of the Hawaiian Islands until 1872.

Sculpted by Thomas Gould in Florence, Italy, and dedicated in 1883, this statue of King Kamehameha I is one of four commissioned statues erected in honor of Hawaii's first king. The 18-foot bronze statue stands in front of Aliiolani Hale, Hawaii's State Supreme Court building, and across the street from the Iolani Palace.

The original statue was lost at sea off the Falkland Islands while being shipped from Europe and this statue was made to replace it. When the original statue was later found and recovered in 1912, it was erected near King Kamehameha's birthplace in Kapaau at North Kohala on the island of Hawaii, the Big Island.

In 1997, the latest Kamehameha Statue was dedicated and erected in Wailoa State Park in Hilo on the island of Hawaii. Another Kamehameha Statue was dedicated in 1969 and sits in the National Statuary Hall inside the United States Capitol Building in Washington DC.

All of the Kamehameha Statues are draped in lei on June 11th, which is Kamehameha Day in Hawaii in honor of King Kamehameha the Great, in a ceremony featuring hula dancers and Hawaiians portraying King Kamehameha and his favorite wife Kaahumanu.
